In addition to this year’s World Population day, WPD, aimed to enlighten the minds of the youth to the negative impacts of teenage pregnancy. The World Health Organzation has once said that 18 million underaged girls get pregnant by year.
As relevance to their objective, this year’s theme is “Preventing Teenage Pregnancy”. According to the NAtional Population Commission Chairman, Eze Festus Odimegwu “The World Health Organisation said, about 16 million girls aged, 15-19 years and two million girls under the age of 15 give birth every year.”
Odimegwu mentiond that there are four major reasons responsible for increasing cases of teenage pregnancy in Nigeria – poverty, sexual abuse, ignorance and cultural/religious beliefs.
