Due to the increasing case of HIV/AIDS in the Philippines, the Department of Health is now focusing more on the awareness of the disease. According to acting Secretary Janette Grin, the major hindrance of preventing such disease to spread is because of “stigma and discrimination.”
The “stigma and discrimination” of those who are infected drives them away from being treated. Thus, these infected people can deliberately spread the virus. If only these infected people are treated with full respect and understanding, they could avoid spreading the virus and they can be treated as well.
Furthermore, DOH has also observed that since 2007 there has been a rise of males who have sex with other males and with drugs being injected. An increase also of females infected due to freelance sex workers who do not comply with the health screening requirement by health centers.
